Project Title

Conservation of the Nile Softshell Turtle (Trionyx triunguis) Population in Kömürcüler Stream and Reduction of Tourism-Induced Artificial Feeding Pressure

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to conserve the Nile softshell turtle (Trionyx triunguis) population inhabiting Kömürcüler Stream, to reduce tourism-related artificial feeding pressure, and to scientifically assess the impacts of this pressure on the species’ natural behavior and reproductive success.

The species is considered vulnerable within the Mediterranean basin and requires effective conservation of its habitats to ensure long-term survival.

Our Objectives

  • To monitor the status of the Nile softshell turtle population in Kömürcüler Stream
  • To develop and implement measures to reduce tourism-related artificial feeding behavior
  • To investigate the effects of artificial feeding on the species’ behavior and reproductive success
  • To raise awareness among local communities, tourism operators, and visitors
  • To generate scientific data and develop management recommendations for the conservation of the species

Contribution to the Environment and the Region

Through this project:

  • Conservation efforts for the vulnerable Nile softshell turtle will be strengthened.
  • The preservation of natural feeding behavior will be supported.
  • Sustainable human–wildlife interaction in the region will be promoted.
  • Negative ecological impacts of tourism activities will be mitigated.
  • Scientific data will be provided to support long-term conservation and management plans for the region.

Project Implementation

Within the scope of the project:

  • Population monitoring and observational studies will be conducted.
  • Awareness materials (informational boards, posters, etc.) will be used in tourism areas.
  • Informational meetings and outreach activities will be carried out with local stakeholders and tourism businesses.
  • Data on feeding behavior and reproductive success will be collected.
  • The collected data will be transformed into scientific reports and publications.

Project Supporters

The project is implemented under the coordination of the Ecosystem Conservation Association and is supported by The Rufford Foundation. The project is carried out with the contributions of local stakeholders and relevant institutions.
