Project Title

Monitoring, Mapping, and Sustainable Management of Posidonia oceanica Meadows along the Antalya – Lara Coast

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to scientifically monitor the current status of Posidonia oceanica (Neptune grass) meadows along the Antalya Lara coastline, to map their spatial distribution, and to develop sustainable management strategies that will contribute to the long-term conservation of this critical habitat.

Posidonia meadows represent one of the most important habitats of the Mediterranean ecosystem, playing a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, coastal erosion prevention, and carbon sequestration.

Our Objectives

  • To produce updated distribution maps of Posidonia oceanica meadows along the Lara coast
  • To regularly monitor meadow health status and density
  • To assess the impacts of human activities (tourism, coastal use, marine traffic, etc.)
  • To develop conservation and management recommendations based on scientific data
  • To raise awareness among local stakeholders, the tourism sector, and public institutions

Environmental and Regional Contribution

Through this project:

  • The protection of sensitive marine ecosystems along the Lara coast will be strengthened.
  • Critical habitats for marine organisms will be conserved.
  • The continuity of natural habitats that mitigate coastal erosion will be supported.
  • Scientific data will contribute to sustainable tourism practices in the region.
  • A data infrastructure will be established to support marine conservation efforts at local and national levels.

Project Implementation Process

Within the scope of the project:

  • Underwater observation and sampling studies will be conducted.
  • Detailed habitat maps will be generated using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Periodic monitoring activities will be carried out at designated stations.
  • Data will be analyzed, and scientific reports and conservation recommendations will be prepared.
  • Project outputs will be shared with public institutions, academic communities, and local stakeholders.

Project Partners and Support

The project is carried out under the coordination of the Ecosystem Conservation Society, with the support of Douglas & Linda and Latuyab, and in cooperation with relevant institutions, local stakeholders, and scientific advisors.
